VEGAN SMOOTHIE and YOGURT BOWLS

***I promise to eventually get a “jump to recipe button!”

Thanks to Instagram, the world has really upped their “bowl” game!!  I’ve been making yogurt bowls since I can remember, but really just called it yogurt with stuff on top HAHA. And then came along the smoothie in a bowl craze……which is literally just a smoothie poured into a bowl and stuff put on top, so it also is pretty simple to do!

Here’s some of my go-to recipes for smoothie bowls (omit toppings to just make it a smoothie!) as well as a few basic yogurt bowls! You really don’t need any special ingredients, just fruit and toppings – and that’s where you’ll get creative!

What is a smoothie bowl? Well, put your thinking cap on, this is a tough one. It’s a smoothie, made from fruit…..in a bowl!! I know, mind-blowing right? What sets it apart from a plain old drinking smoothie is that you add more yummy toppings on top of it. It’s also healthier then a drinkable smoothie, as slower digestion means better absorption (or something like that – check out Dr Gregor’s explanation about it here!) PLUS, smoothie bowls are much prettier for you to post to your social media ~ hahaha, just trying to fill up the page more!!

The base of the smoothie bowl is interchangeable; using fresh fruit is always great, however for those of us who live in colder climates, purchasing fresh fruits that are shipping thousands of miles isn’t the greatest in terms of environmental impacts, so we often purchase frozen fruits!! So for my recipes, mostly frozen fruits will be used! To help mix the fruit, you can either choose to use non-dairy milk, non-dairy yogurt, a fruit juice or just some water! To make it a complete meal, you’ll need to hit a bunch of the nutrient needs, and fruit alone won’t have enough. For all those, “but where do you get your protein?” folx we face, we can let them know that fruit contains protein! It may not be a lot, but when added to the total daily consumption, it adds up! Seriously, who knew that guava contains  4.2 grams of protein in every cup!! Knowledge sharing!

I’ll start with my most recent creation that blew up on my Instagram, was this beautiful bowl, served in a sustainable coconut bowl and topped with seeds, coconut, cinnamon and banana!

Mixed fruit smoothie bowl ~ recipe below!

Now I’ll admit, that photo is probably one of the prettiest I’ve ever taken so of course, it’ll be all over this post, but here’s a few other bowls I’ve made also! They include both smoothie and yogurt bowls.

Mixed berry smoothie bowl topped with granola, fresh apple, dragon fruit, mango, and plum

Some of my favourite yogurts are: Silk Coconut yogurt (I use the plain for dips, etc) and usually pick up some of the fruit filled ones for my bowls. I’m also loving the new Peach Hibiscus flavour from Activia (yay more fibre!), the new President’s Choice plant-based yogurts are great. OOH I can’t forget the little glass jars that contain the super tasty yogurt from Maison Riviera – they have some made out of oats! And my newest favourite belongs to a coconut-based one, from Chobani

Strawberry oat yogurt, topped with banana, hemp hearts, granola and vegan chocolate chips

I’m a self-proclaimed lover of peanut butter! So there’s often a big blob of natural peanut butter on my yogurt bowls. If you’re like me, you may not be able to spend $14 on all natural peanut butter so I’ll let you know that Kraft Just Peanuts IS vegan as it only contains peanuts! Woohoo! So I often have multiple containers in my pantry – AND the container is the perfect size to reuse for something else in your house. One day, maybe these companies will go back to using glass jars!!!

Peach yogurt, topped with fresh strawberries, raspberries, banana, peanut butter, chia and hemp seeds

How could I not include my super cute vegan socks in this photo?? (get them here!) This was actually an evening snack yogurt bowl. The munchies attacked!!  Mmm mmm good!

Mango and passionfruit yogurt, with hemp granola, unsweetened coconut, walnut pieces, banana, chocolate chips, all natural peanut butter (w/ sea salt) and some chia seeds

And back to another smoothie bowl! You can see my garden in the background so this was a wonderful breakfast for those hot summer mornings

Banana, frozen strawberries, fresh blueberries, mango, a splash of chocolate soy milk and a date.   Toppings were: pomegranate seeds, unsweetened shredded coconut, hemp granola, toasted walnuts, chia and hemp seeds!

This beast kept me full all day!!! Some days you don’t have time to eat when you should, so you need to consume something that packs a punch and keeps you full longer.

Banana, frozen strawberries & pineapple, raspberries and magnesium rich cocoa.  Toppings were: oat granola, fresh mango, peach, plum and dragon fruit!

PURPLE UNICORN SMOOTHIE BOWL

(because it needs to have a magical name!)

******* PLEASE NOTE – RECIPE CONTAINS 1/2 TSP CINNAMON not 12 TSP!!!!!! Will update soon!
